How to Install an eSIM: Step-by-Step (2026)

Installing a travel eSIM takes about five minutes and you only need two things: an eSIM-compatible, unlocked phone and a Wi-Fi or data connection to activate it. Here’s the whole process, step by step.

Before you leave home

Install your eSIM before you travel, while you still have reliable internet. Buying and installing the profile needs a connection, but it won’t start using data until you land and switch it on โ€” so you arrive ready to go.

Step-by-step installation

  1. Buy a plan for your destination in the provider’s app (for example the Saily app) or website.
  2. Install the eSIM. Most apps activate it automatically; otherwise scan the QR code you’re sent from a second screen, or tap the install link.
  3. Label it โ€” call it “Travel” so it’s easy to find alongside your home line.
  4. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM only. This sounds counter-intuitive, but “roaming” just lets the travel eSIM use its local partner network. Your home SIM stays on its normal settings.
  5. Set the eSIM as your data line when you arrive, and leave your home SIM for calls and texts.

On arrival

When you land, go to your mobile-data settings, select the travel eSIM as the active data line, and make sure data roaming is enabled for it. Within a minute or two you should see the local network name appear. That’s it โ€” you’re connected.

Troubleshooting

  • No connection? Toggle Airplane mode on and off, and confirm data roaming is on for the eSIM line.
  • Still nothing? Check that the eSIM is set as the Mobile Data line and that “Data Roaming” is enabled under its settings.
  • Restart the phone โ€” it forces a fresh network search.
